I work from home and travel daily to different schools I consult for. Can I claim this mileage on tax return?
well you could definitely write off the 50 miles; then you must figure the difference between your employers reimbursements and the actual irs mileage deduction. For example if you drive for your employer 500miles/mo or 6000mi/yr and the irs allows a i.e. $.50 per mile and your employer only reimbursed you $.35 per mile then you could claim the difference of $900.00. However , this is lowered by the 2% limit rule.So if your adjusted gross income is $30,000 then only the amount over $600 is a deduction on the 1040 schedule A. To take advantage of the schedule A deductions they all must add up to over your standard deduction like real estate tax, state tax , home interest payments, med expenses over 7.5% of agi, charity and a few more. You might be able to deduct meals and entertainment while working for your employer also if they did not reimburse you. good luck
