I've read "Things Fall Apart" for school, and am working on a 15 page study guide, but need help. Anyone??
Okay, I think I can help you with 1 and 3, but 2 is a little beyond me (never got that into foreshadowing). For the first one, Roaring Flame....remember how he was? How his children and wives feared him? How he was a fighter who was tough and showed no emotion? The way I see it is like this: Okonkwo is the giver of life (like fire), and the sustainer of a family (like a fire). However, when not handled carefully, and with caution, he can get completely out of control (like when he shot at his youngest wife). Fire is the same way. When it is contained, the life can be of benefit, but when it gets out of control, it can be very detrimental. Roaring Flame is not a positive name for a positive person, it is a negative name for a dangerous person....if he wasn't, his name would have been Dancing Flame, or Flickering Flame. That's what I think the first question means. Now, the third question. What this maxim means is that all individuals in this community, are connected, and all of them help and asssit one another in whatever way they can. Look in the book, and read up on the commeradare of the people, and the customs that take place when vistors come. An individual is not lonely, or without family, or without someone from whom he can recieve assistance when he has problems, be they big or small. That is the beauty of the book itself. I hope this helps you some, I read this book 8 years ago before I graduated college and loved it. I hope this helps you some, and good luck!
