Why is it that Gary Bettman touches turns to garbage?
Phoenix has population and corporations galore going for it. It's one of the largest cities in America. It "should" work, but to this point, hasn't (based on the $70mm in losses over the last three years).Manitoba has a fan base but none of the economic reality needed to sustain an NHL franchise in 21st century economics. The NHL will not return to Manitoba barring some massive population shift and some massive business development unlike anything the world has ever seen. Sorry...it's a lovely town with lovely people, but it does not have the infrastructure and corporate base that is needed to support an NHL franchise. As far as the attendance figures...I'd like to see an actual Paid Attendance (i.e. the number of people in the building who paid for a ticket) before touting numbers from anywhere. In other words, don't count the comps."If" Balsillie gets a favourable ruling from the bankruptcy court, he's already said he would relocate the club to Southern Ontario, NOT Manitoba. Southern Ontario is the only workable 7th Canadian market; it's the only market that has the business, population, and revenue upside that would support an NHL franchise. If you look at the Sunbelt expansion:-San Jose and Dallas are successes-Anaheim is a success-Carolina (relocation) does well-Colorado (relocation) does well-The Florida teams are a mixed bag (Tampa is struggling financially)-Atlanta is a mixed bag (part of conglomerate)-Nashville...is Nashville (lack of corporate sponsor revenues hurt)-Expansion franchises in Minnesota and Columbus have done well economically and are fairly stable
